Outdoor Activities

In addition to the outdoor activities in your own backyard, Middle Tennessee offers a wide variety of leisure and recreational choices, just a few of which are:

Virgin Falls Trail is a beautiful out and back trail located near Sparta, Tennessee that features two waterfalls, one of which appears out of a cave before it plunges 80 feet and disappears into another cave.  That there is no river in sight makes for a breathtakingly surreal image.  A must see!

Burgess Falls State Natural Area, located in Middle Tennessee, lies on the eastern edge of Tennessee's Highland Rim adjacent to the Cumberland Plateau and is noted for its natural beauty. Sheer bluffs, narrow ridges, rolling water and abundant mixed forest, characterize this area. The Falling Water River drops approximately 250 feet, providing numerous waterfalls, breathtaking scenery and overlooks. The park is home to over 300 species trees and plants and an abundance of wildlife. Park visitors can visit the large Native Butterfly Garden located adjacent to the upper parking lot.

Center Hill Lake

The lake provides varied outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of visitors each year.  Because of the temperate climate and relatively long recreation season, visitors have numerous activities to choose from including fishing, hunting, camping, picnicking, boating, canoeing, hiking, and many others.

Considered one of the cleanest lakes in the United States, Dale Hollow Lake offers a great variety of water activities, including fishing tournaments, boating, floating, skiing, kayaking and much more.  Dale Hollow Lake is well known as a prime location for smallmouth bass fishing, currently holding the world record for the largest such fish ever taken (11 lb., 15 oz).  But Dale Hollow offers more than just fun on the water — its rolling hills and 620 miles of undeveloped shoreline, combined with a mild climate and long recreation season, make it an ideal family vacation destination, too.  The area that surrounds Dale Hollow is lined with terrific trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding; great grounds for hunting, camping, and bird watching; as well as terrific sites for sporting, including a world-class golf course.

If you are looking for serious adventure, Big South Fork National River and Recreation area encompasses 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau and offers scenic overlooks along miles of river gorges, imposing rock formations and sandstone bluffs, hiking trails, and more with opportunities for mountain biking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and horseback riding.  You can even ride the Big South Fork Scenic Railway and visit the coal mining town of Blue Heron.  This and more is only an hour and half drive away.
